A Town Founded by Political Refugees

Boerne’s story starts in 1849 with a group of German immigrants known as the Forty-Eighters, political refugees who left Europe after the failed revolutions of 1848. They camped along Cibolo Creek and built what would become one of the most distinctly German towns in Texas, later platted and named for the author Karl Ludwig Börne in 1852.

That independent streak showed up again a decade later. Boerne voted against secession before the Civil War, a rare position for a Texas town at the time.
